Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month October 2021

Congratulations to Denise and Bernard Siegal – October’s winner of Junius Heights Historic District Yard of the Month.

The Siegals moved into their 1916 Arts and Crafts Bungalow on 701 Huntley St in November of 1978. They were on the 5-year plan (fix it up and sell). Obviously, they changed their minds and made their house into a home.

In June of 2003, Patrick Boyd, an associate at David Rolston Landscape Architects, designed the front gardens. They chose plants that would work well with the existing sprinkler system that was installed in 2001. Their yard/garden is still a work in progress even after so many years, Bernard is the main force behind design changes and then they corroborate and put the ideas into action. It takes a great deal of time and effort, but Denise and Bernard both like “playing in the dirt” so it is worth it. They do all of their own yard work, except for the tree trimming, leaving that to the professionals. The Siegals planted the live oak in 1980 and it has grown into the glorious focal point of their front yard. One of their favorite features is the ferns planted around the giant live oak, they were planted in 2003 and remarkably survived the February ice storm of 2021.

Congratulations, Denise and Bernard! You are one of the many neighbors that make Junius Heights such a wonderful community.
