WHO IS JHCW? Our efforts are all to reduce crime, raise safety and property values. When we bought our home over a decade ago, there was a lot of vandalism, car theft, etc, right on our block where I had just paid shy of 200k and was freaking out about the crime. We are here to raise awareness of the crime element in our area and annihilate it!

We throw money at the problem by raising cash to fund off duty patrolling of senior police officers. This is our primary weapon. These officers know our area, can and do, make arrests during their shifts. These added shifts are vital to create the police presence and reduce the crime.

Next, we challenge folks to take their dogs and walk their streets and alleys. Report any suspicious activities to the police. This is something you can do every day on your own schedule.

We are still in need of VIPs, for our voluntary civilian patrols. Please email if interested.

We can all be a part of crime reduction by paying attention to our surroundings and reporting on anything or anyone that appears suspicious. Get to know your neighbors. Stop and ask questions or take a picture of anyone who appears suspicious.

Make this year one of reduced crime by remaining vigilant of your surroundings, reporting any unusual or suspicious activities to 911 (asking for the expediter unit) and by contributing to the watch. Hide & secure valuables and partner with your neighbors to look out for each other when at work or on vacation. If you can work from home or are in a position to vary your schedule, do so as much as you can and coordinate with a neighbor if possible. Thieves typically scout for the easiest target. A neighborhood where folks are watching and reporting on something strange next door or across the street makes it more of a challenge.

We rely on neighborhood contributions to pay for these patrols, which involves an hourly rate for the patrol car and the officer scheduled. If you are not yet a member, please consider supporting us today.

There are several wonderful classes currently being held by the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department, from youth to senior classes, and from fitness to dog training. With the holidays around the corner, keep in mind that contributors can send us their vacation schedules and we will share this with our patrol officers to check and pay added attention to your home, during their scheduled shifts.

Be vigilant of your surroundings; report any unusual or suspicious activities to 911, asking for the expediter unit. Break down boxes for  purchases such as Laptops and flat screen TVs so that it is not obvious you just bought one. You can take it one step farther by hauling off the boxes so they are not in your recycle. Lock up and store all valuables out of sight.  Watch out for each other, by maintaining a block buddy system so you know someone is there to help look out for you. My aunt, before she passed, had a system with her neighbor who was much younger.  She would raise her kitchen window curtain each day by a certain time and this meant she was ok and got up that morning. It was her neighbor who alerted the family the day that curtain was not raised. Aunt Sally died peacefully in her sleep at 83.

The Broken Window: Passing along a neighborhood street, you notice a vacant house with a broken window. Later you pass by again and now see a second broken window. You think, boy, this is getting to look worse for the neighborhood, but you let it go, being busy with your own plans and schedule. Later, there is a third broken window on that poor empty house, and then a fourth. Nothing is said, nothing is done and next you notice graffiti appearing on that vacant house. Then you see someone who doesn’t own the property living in it at nights, camping out there and perhaps hiding from authorities, figuring no one is watching so it is a good place for them.  Thus begins a foothold of degradation and a great invitation to crime.

But what if somebody had repaired that window as soon as they noticed it broken?  Sort of like car repair, or taking care of our own health, things begin with one or two small issues and snowball, if we let it, out of control.  When we appear to care, when we talk to and know our neighbors, help when needed, alert our neighbors to something that may cause a problem later, thieves hear that message loudly and clearly and move on to another area where it might be easier for them to steal or vandalize. These are their homes, these are our friends and our neighbors and we take great care to preserve our environment.

With living together, comes some patience and tolerance inherent in accepting our various human flaws and personalities.  But as we reach for the strength to slow down this holiday season, to act for the common good of all who reside here, by being a great neighbor, we foster joy, peace and protection. May the holiday times ahead be filled with more joy, less stress, more peace, less strain, and the glorious fulfillment of the hopes we always bring with us into the coming New Year.  May you all have a heaping load of happy in your hearts. On October 10, thieves entered a house in the 4900 block of Victor via a dining room window.  Even though this house is not in our neighborhood, it is close, and crime knows no boundaries.

If you see anything suspicious or anybody that appears to be watching a house or a neighborhood, do not hesitate to call 911.

Animal control has been making regular sweeps throughout the neighborhood and impounding any stray dogs.  If you own a dog, per Dallas code, the dogs should not be allowed to roam free.  A lot of the dogs that the city has picked up are domestic dogs and have owners.  At night, if they are unsecured, they do what their instincts tell them to do:  they find other dogs, run in a pack, and kill cats for sport.  If the city impounds them and their owners claim them, the owners are fined and a chip is placed on the dog.

Until the situation clears up, do not allow your cats to roam freely, especially at night.  If you see any stray dogs, call 311 immediately.  They are instructed to call animal control.

Old East Dallas Early Childhood PTA

Do you have preschool age children or grandchildren? Are you a new parent or expecting your first baby soon?  Meet other neighborhood parents with young children by joining the Old East Dallas Early Childhood PTA.  The OEDECPTA encourages friendships among families and provides support to Lipscomb Elementary School .

Burlgaries

• A house in the 5600 block of Worth was broken into on Thursday, August, 27 and items were stolen.
• A house in the 6300 block of Reiger was broken into on Wednesday, August 26.  An unidentified suspect(s) used a power drill on the side window to gain entry.

Offences involving vehicles

• An unidentified suspect threw an object at a vehicle causing damage in the 5900 block of Columbia on Thursday, August 27
• A passenger-side window was broken in a vehicle parked in the 5900 block of Victor on Tuesday, August 25.
• A vehicle’s driver’s side window was broken in the 4800 block of Junius and items were stolen on Tuesday, August 25.
• An unidentified suspect attempted to remove and steal items from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Nesbitt on Monday, August 24.
• A rear window was broken in a vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Abrams Road on Friday, August 21.

Criminal Mischief

• A window was broken in a house in the 700 block of Skillman by an unidentified suspect on Tuesday, August 25.

Volunteer Patrol Training

The Dallas Police Central Division will be holding a Volunteers in Patrol Class on Saturday, September 19 from 9 am to 3 pm.  This class will include a tour of the City of Dallas 911 facility.  There will be a guest speaker who will discuss crime prevention ofn the Katy Trail .  This course will be held at 3535 Travis Suite No. 100.

Crime Alerts

Every neighborhood has its time and we certainly have had ours with the latest surge in crime.  However, things are looking much better this week thanks to our vigilant police department and alert residents.   The police arrested a juvenile in connection with an armed robbery that took place in the neighborhood and were able to connect that individual to vehicle burglaries.  The police were also able to stop a house burglary on Worth and were able to arrest the suspect.

Burglaries of Vehicles

There were two car burglaries this week, down from a high two weeks ago of an average of two car break-ins a day, and down from an average of one car break-in per day last week.  However, two vehicle burglaries is still too much, particularly if it happened to you.

• Thursday, August 6.  Window was pried open on a vehicle parked in the 6400 block of Gaston and the stereo was removed.
• Sunday, August 2.  A door lock on a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Victor was popped and items were stolen.

Robberies

• An unidentified suspect pointed a gun at a victim and stole property in the 7200 block of Gaston on Monday, August 3.

Burglaries

• A residence in the 4700 block of Worth was broken into on August 7, Friday.  An alert neighbor noticed and called the police.  The police responded rapidly (at 12:03 p.m.) , blocked off the street, and were able to arrest the suspect.  Hurray for our police and the alert neighbor!!  Even though this is just outside the boundaries of JH, success, like crime, knows no boundaries!

Criminal Mischief

• An unidentified suspect(s) used black spray paint on a garage in the 5200 block of Victor on Thursday, August 6.

Provocative Fliers

• An unidentified person dumped provocative fliers in front of a house in the 5400 block of Worth on Tuesday, August 4.  Freedom of speech is something we all cherish.  However, this is harassment, not freedom of speech.  If you saw anything that morning, please call 911.

Deputy Chief Golbeck will be there to discuss the previous three month’s crime tend and goals for the next three months.  In addition, there will be a guest speaker who will address emergency preparedness and public safety.

The meetings run about 1.5 hours and are filled with information pertaining to every neighborhood in the Central Patrol Division.  There will be a time for questions and answers.

Everybody is invited!!  The more the merrier!!  It light of our recent crime wave in Junius Heights , it is important that we are well represented.

Calling All Parents of Lipscomb Elementary Students

Registration for all Lipscomb students will begin on Thursday, August 13, lasting through the first day of school, August 24.  This registration is for all Lipscomb students, new and returning.  On Friday, August 14, the YMCA will be at Lipscomb Elementary enrolling for the YMCA after-school program.

We are continuing to see lots of crimes in our neighborhood, particularly those of vehicles.  The criminals may be looking for identity papers.  Please do not keep credit card, bank statements, driver’s licenses, etc. in vehicles.

Burglaries of Vehicles

• Sunday, August 2.  A thief popped a door lock on a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Victor and went through the car.  It is unsure if anything was taken.
• Saturday, August 1.  An unlocked vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Victor had items stolen from it.
• Saturday, August 1.  A vehicle parked in the 200 block of Henderson had items stolen from it.
• Friday, July 31.  A vehicle, parked in the 5400 block of Gaston, was stolen.
• Thursday, July 30. An unlocked vehicle parked in the 700 block of Huntley had items stolen from it.
• Monday, July 27. Left side window of vehicle broken in a car parked in the 5700 block of Worth.
• Monday, July 27.  Property stolen from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Paulus.
• Saturday, July 25.  Drivers side window was pried open and items were stolen from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Skillman.

Burglaries of Residences

• Saturday, August 1.  A front window was forced open in a house in the 5100 block of Junius.  Items were stolen and the thief made an exit through the front door.

• Tuesday, July 28.  A glass door was kicked in property was stolen from a residence in the 6100 block of Gaston.

Criminal Mischief

• Thursday, July 27.  Window broken in the 5900 block of Gaston by unknown person.

Robberies

• Friday, July 31.  There was an aggrevated robbery in the 5900 block of Reiger.  The suspects stolen the victim’s property by hitting him in the head with a screwdriver.

• Tuesday, July  28.  An armed robbery occurred in the 5700 block of Gaston.  An unidentified suspect held a gun to the victim’s head.  No further details are available at the present time.

Plant Thieves

The enjoyment of plants on a front porch is one of the pleasures of urban living. Lately we have been targets of plant thieves. Some of the stolen plants are recycled as gifts, reused in thieves’ back yards, or resold (at a nice profit) at a flea market somewhere in the metroplex. There has been only one sighting of a plant thief: a skinny, tall, black man, who was a passenger in a Cadillac. He was seen removing plants from a porch in the 6100 block of Victor at 11 pm May 10. It is not known if any of the other plant thefts are related.

On Monday, May 18, a plant valued at $175.00, was stolen from a porch in the 4800 block of Tremont.

A house in the 5800 block of Victor had its plants stolen from the front porch step and a hanging basket from the back porch on Sunday, May 17.

An unidentified suspect stole a ceramic planter and palm tree from a house in the 6200 block of Reiger on Sunday, May 17.

A large begonia and another potted plant were stolen off a porch in the early hours of Tuesday, May, 12. The theft occurred in the 5500 block of Tremont.

Six potted plants were stolen from a front porch on Thursday, May 7, from a house in the 700 block of Dumas.

Three hanging baskets of ferns were stolen from a front porch sometime during the first week of May from a porch in the 5300 block of Victor.

Money Stolen from Apartment

An identified suspect stole money using force from his girlfriend in an apartment located in the 5800 block of Worth on Wednesday, May 27. The police are investigating.

An Unwelcome Visitor

On Sunday, May 17, around 8:30-9:00 p.m. a white male with longish hair rang a doorbell at a house at the corner of Beacon and Tremont. The resident went to the door but did not open it. The man asked if “the man of the house was at home.” He was told that the man of the house was sleeping and soon left.

Unsolicited personal questions are not appropriate, especially at night. Please do not open your door if you do not know the person and call 911.

House on Tremont Burglarized

A house located in the 5700 block of Tremont was burglarized on Wednesday, May 20, and items were stolen.

House on Gaston Burglarized

A residence in the 5400 block of Gaston was burglarized on Tuesday, May 26.

Burglaries of Motor Vehicles

• On May 26, Tuesday, a vehicle parked in the 5000 block of Worth had its left window broken. Items were stolen from the vehicle.
• On May 26, Tuesday, an unidentified suspect stole items from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 6100 block of Victor.
• On May 25, Monday, a vehicle in the 6200 block of Reiger had its window broken and items were stolen.

• On May 23, Saturday, an unidentified suspect walked up to a vehicle in the 5500 block of Columbia and punched the driver’s side front window, shattering it. The suspect left in a white Ford Crown Victoria with 22 inch wheels. Even though this is not in the JHHD neighborhood, it is close and crime knows no boundaries. If you see this car, please call 911.
• On May 21, Thursday, a vehicle parked in the 5500 block of Reiger had bleach and motor oil poured into its gas tank.

• On May 18, Monday, a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Junius had its passenger’s side rear window broken and items stolen.
• On May 18, Monday, a vehicle parked in the 6000 block of Gaston, had its passenger’s side window broken and items stolen. It is not known if the incidents on Junius and Gaston are related but it looks suspicious.
• On Saturday, May 16, a vehicle parked in the 1825 block of Abrams was broken into.
• On Friday, May 15, a rock was thrown through the driver’s side window of a vehicle parked in the 5100 block of Worth. Items were stolen.

Activities in the 6000 block of Worth

There have reports of vandalism in the 6000 block of Worth that occurred Memorial Day weekend. Unfortunately nothing has been logged in the police computer system. Please call in every offense to the police. I know we all get frustrated with the vandalism, but if the police don’t know about it, officially nothing happened. The frequency of our police patrols is based, in part, on the number of incidences reported. Thanks.

Yorkies Babies Up for Adoption

There have been several car jackings on Mockingbird lane recently. The victims who are targeted are usually female and the carjacker is described as a middle-aged African-American male, between 5’8” and 6,’ weighing 160-180 pounds. He has missing teeth or gaps in his teeth. The hijacking have taken place along Mockingbird Lane between Central and Abrams. About 10:45 pm on Sunday night, April 13, in the 5700 block of Worth Street , residents were alerted by a puppy who started to whine at the bedroom door. Thinking that the puppy had to go out, they started to go outside only to find a man of African-American descent with a backpack on their porch. The door was not opened and the police were called immediately. The man left the porch and went north on Fulton and right on Junius. The police, unfortunately, were not able to locate him.

That night, the porch was dark. The porch lights which normally are on at this house, had burnt out on Easter Sunday and the residents hadn’t had time to replace them.

A week or so ago, a video camera captured a man matching a general description of this person-of-interest, removing items from a porch several blocks away. It is not known at the present time if these two incidents are related. If you do see anything suspicious, particularly at night, do not hesitate to call 911. Most legitimate evening strollers do not carry backpacks with them. Report the incident as a “suspicious person.” It gets a higher priority than a generic concern.

Vehicle Stolen

A vehicle was stolen from the residential driveway in the 5800 block of Victor in the early hours of Monday, April 6.

Vehicles Burglarized

A Bronco II Ford was burglarized on Friday, April 3 in the 5800 block of Columbia . An unidentified suspect went into the unlocked vehicle and stole items. A car parked in the 5300 block of Junius had its driver’s side window broken and property inside stolen on Friday, April 3.

A vehicle in the 5500 block of Reiger had rocks thrown at the rear window, breaking it on Saturday, April 4. The apartment manager claimed that unknown kids from another apartment had caused the damage.

Graffiti Painted on Window

Graffiti was painted on a window of a house in the 400 block of Lowell on Saturday, April 4.

Door Kicked In

A door was kicked in the 1600 block of Abrams on Friday, April 3.

Robberies on Gaston and Reiger

There was an aggravated robbery in the 4900 block of Gaston on Wednesday, April 8. A suspect displayed a knife and demanded money from the victim.

There was also an aggravated robbery in the 4700 block of Reiger on Saturday, April 11. An unidentified suspect, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded money and property.

At this time, there is no further information on either incident

Homeless May be Sleeping in Area Dumpsters

On Wednesday, March 18, a thin, white or Hispanic male wearing a red baseball cap and a vest was reported snooping around a courtyard on Reiger. When a local resident arrived, the man immediately fled. It may be the same person who is homeless and has been sleeping in area dumpsters. Sleeping in dumpsters is dangerous. The machines that pick up dumpster have been known to crush sleeping victims. If you see any such activity, please call 911.

Illegal Parking by Area Business

Cars getting tires repaired at the tire shop at the corner of Beacon and Columbia sometimes illegally park in the alley. An area resident recently called 911 to report the illegal parking and the police quickly responded. Alleys are for emergency access, not for the parking of cars.

Burglaries of Motor Vehicles

• March 18, Wednesday, two vehicles in the 5900 block of Worth had their windows broken and items stolen.

• On Thursday, March 12, a vehicle in the 500 block of Lowell was vandalized

Stolen Electricity

On Tuesday, March 17, the police determined that suspects in the 5800 block of Reiger “intentionally appropriated and consumed electricity of an undetermined valued” by an “inappropriate electrical connection.,” i.e., they stole electricity. Not only is this illegal, it is very dangerous.

Drug Paraphernalia found

Drug paraphernalia was found in the 600 block of Ridgeway on Thursday, April 19. No further details are available.
